It is never enough for the work to be done in the name of excellence, nor is it enough to produce the desired results. It must also leave me with a sensation of wonder and amazement. It must take my breath away.

My favorite fountain pen and a cup of coffee at hand toward the art of recording dreams.

The smoke of evergreen plants perfumed the air - rosemary and cedar - to sharpen my memory.

Then I cross check what I recall against the mirror of what I think I remember, just as the queen of coins looks into her own mirror.

Change changes not what we see, and thus brings no peace of mind, if only what changes is geographical in nature.

In the early hours of the morning is when my mind is sharpest, and so among the other rituals I enjoy in the morning it is the rituals of divination I often enjoy.

A cold hearth, but a hot cup of coffee, I read the cards and the crows outside have much to say on the matter.

'Go back to sleep,' I say.

'You are not roosters,' and quiet they go.

At least some of us can sleep in.

Pine medicine and magic drying by the hearth.

Needles, bark, and even a wand to be blackened at either end in the old tradition where male witches were said to battle with them.

I had not thought to take a wand upon my recent outing into the first, but in my own personal gnosis if there is an inquiry born from my mind or mouth and the wind blows then I have for decades understood this to be confirmation to proceed.

It is a whispering, flowing 'yes'.

Toward the art of exploring pine.

Deep in pine forests I walk silently and listen.

The lower branches are filled with dead needles while the higher ones where the fae folk dwell are bright green.

It is a unique reminder of the chthonic realms below, the realm of the yet living above, and of the cycles of composted earth giving way to new life.

My basket is full and by the hearth pine medicines and magic will be both prepared and conjured.

Many thanks to the evergreen ancient, guardian against the evil eye, securer of memory, and tranquil mentor.

I cast wood upon the fire bearing a spirit hole, an earthly device that works well for seeing and speaking into the unseen realms.

Offerings of powdered resins and garden born botanicals are cast upon the fire to honor the spirits and powers of hearth and home.

Gathered on Midsummer's Eve last year, some from plants I have placed into the garden and some from the rosemary my mother placed into it well over two decades ago.

Seven birthdays for you in the realm of the dead.

I quite like making my mother a birthday cake each year. It is almost always something quintessentially classic to the southern United States, which I know she would have loved.

As an adult I went out of my way to wrap her presents in birthday paper and otherwise make a point of defining clear boundaries between her birthday and the winter holidays.

Now there are no presents to wrap. Instead, I unwrap memories as I sit before her birthday candles - three, for that was our number, and blue, for the eyes she gave me and the ocean she loved.

She lends strength to the crafting of sigils for clients, which are informed by what my Le Tarot Noir Marseille tarot has to say on the matter.

The most precious thing on the table? The eraser my mother gave me to decades ago when I sketched more than I do now. After all this time it is still soft and moldable.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) root from the garden. I harvest from these plants every year and then return them to the soil. This is year six, if my memory serves me correctly.

If I must play favorites, then when it comes to the world of plants valerian is certainly housed amongst such.

Most of what I grow I tincture to aid with insomnia, migraines, anxiety and depression. While I seldom encounter insomnia, have never experienced a migraine, anxiety only in rare acute instances, and my days of depression are decades behind me, I have treated others who do experience these things with it.

In spite of Venus holding sway over this plant, I find its medicine is less of a soft, gentle embrace by the systems of the body that we might be inclined to think of with Venusian plants, and more of an elegant stiletto from an enchanting lady of the evening who is decisively invested in solving problems.

Less is certainly more though with this plant, as I have noticed with those who experience chronic anxiety that it can have a reverse impact, particularly when the root is not fresh.

As far as folk practices of sorcery and cunning magic, it is sometimes called vandal root, utilized to ruin another's wealth and prosperity. Running counter point to that, there's ideas about utilizing it to conjure wealth for the owner, particularly if buried at the crossroads in the devil's name only to be retrieved after a period of time. Additionally it has been considered an aphrodisiac, and it is said that young women from Wales would hide a piece in their girdles or bodices in order to hold man's attention.

I quite like it most of all for dream work. Unlike modern interpretations of mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris), which helps little if at all in the dreamscape for me, valerian root produces more vivid and decidedly otherworldly dreams in me almost as if creating a nightly shamanic landscape for my mind.

There's a mixture of pain and shock by my words, then disappointment, as this is not very exciting they tell me.

'You never asked me for something exciting about yourself.'

I sit before the things my mother left me. An old writing desk that was my altar in my teens. Her buddhas. Crystals that illuminate and dance in the soft light. She also left me with a love of language as it was with her that my understanding of words began.

I am thinking of language. Language is everything, and everything is the language. Cards, mathematics, hair, rituals and spells.

Some aspects of the English language are rooted in malice. Some offer vague subjectivity and little constructive criticism. Words such stupid, ugly, fat, useless, and crazy for starters. Their power is like that of a curse, meant to lay low those they are cast upon. However, outside of offering up malicious ruin they offer no real value for me. Which is to say if ever I desire to be malicious I might call upon such words, but if my goals are something else altogether there are better words at my disposal. Far better.

These words cut deep though. Time and time again I run into them through the people who have been dealt these curses. Often, even after so many years have passed, these words are still the source of much sorrow and anguish.

When such words are used we need a defense against them. My first line of defense is to remind myself that no one whose opinion is worth a damn will ever offer you criticism that is vague and unkind. Second, what is this person's credentials? If they are remarking upon your hair yet hold no training or concrete insights, who cares?

The best defense is to adjust your own perception of what is being handed to you. When you see such words for what they are - unkindness tools meant to inflict pain and offering no substantial value beyond that, then you are unassailable.
